Dizzy's voice training tips (secret) ((if you so desire))
ive been voice training for about a year and im still working on it, but ive achieved a voice that im happy with and that gets me gendered correctly irl, online, and on the phone!!! this isnt a guide, but tips that i think dont get talked about enough. first, a list, then the explanation. SO LETS GO!!!!
- identify the kind of voice you want
- take a look at anatomy
- learn what it feels like to make different sounds
- practice in every day life
- record yourself to track progress over time
- be patient and kind with yourself
now for the details!!!
is something that will take time (probably) and might change over time. when i was first voice training i was trying to emulate Ayesha Erotica specifically from her track Yummy but then more recently as i worked more on developing who i want to be as a woman i decided that a deeper more sultry tomboyish voice fits who i am. so you can absolutely choose whatever voice you want! it may take time though but thats ok because its part of the journey.
is something that youll find a lot if you look up voice tutorials and honestly its overrated in my opinion. i think it helps to take a look, but what is more important is understanding resonance. resonance is the BIG thing. there are other things like pitch and vocal weight among others for example, but resonance is where i would start and focus on. this tutorial series was by far the most helpful for me, but tutorials will only take you so far especially once you start to develop your own sense of self and "discover" for lack of a better word, the voice you want. for me i didnt want the higher pitched soft feminine voice that most tutorials go for. theres nothing wrong with it, its just not me. FairyPrincessLucy's "How to talk like a girl good"
going along with number two, its way more helpful to feel whats actually happening in your body when you try to change your resonance, pitch, ect than trying to name things with scientific terms or intellectualizing the process. feeling what your body is actually doing will go way further in training your body to do what you want to produce the sound you want. the intellectual stuff helps, but i wouldnt focus on it. for example when i speak, i focus a lot on "placing my voice in my chin or lower jaw". i have no idea what im doing scientifically or with anatomy, but i know that the "feeling" is what produces the sound i want and therefore i can focus on it in my body rather than my brain. i hope that makes sense.
is fairly straightforward. you have to practice speaking in everyday life and practice with words youre actually going to use. reading passages like the rainbow passage for example, which is a classic voice training passage, is helpful but isnt something youre going to say in everyday life. often when i struggle with my voice, its with things im actually saying and not with passages from voice training guides. some great ways to practice are in retail, ordering food at the drive thru, on the phone, in a video game, and with trusted friends. a lot of people are shy and embarrassed when practicing and i understand that, but think of it like this. when youre talking to people youve never spoken to before, they just assume your voice is as it sounds. basically no one is gonna be like "ew youre voice training?" literally no one will know. thats why i say do it with trusted friends too. its really important to practice words and phrases you actually use because if you dont, youll struggle with things you say most often and it creates a lot of frustration and discouragement. also with someone trusted, ask them what you can improve on. asking my partner what i need to work on has helped way more than any tutorial.
this one is also fairly straightforward. i use an app called VocalPitch and its not very important what app you use but i just like this one because it can tell you what your pitch it. PITCH IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT like its an element but its so easy to do once youve mastered resonance and other more important things. anyway i use it to record my voice and then play it back. its also helpful to be able to send those recordings to others for feedback. you can also save and load voice recordings which is helpful because you should take notes on them too. especially when you record something you really like. take notes on how it felt when you were speaking that way so you can remember. memory and muscle memory are so important!!!
this is the hardest part. you will get frustrated, you will want to quit, you will throw your paws up and say WHAT THE FUCK IS THE POINT I HATE THIS!!!! and thats ok. if youre like me youll look up "why is voice training so fucking hard" and then read reddit threads where other women write about their struggles. this is ok too. whats important is you dont give up. its worth it. i worked so fucking hard to get the voice i have right now and its not even completely what i want. i still feel i struggle with it. i still need to ask for support and validation on it. all of these things are ok. what is not ok is giving up!!! celebrate your W's and learn from your L's. lean on those close to you when youre crashing out because you cant do your voice like you could in that one clip that one time. but dont give up. there is a voice inside of you that is your true voice and it will always be there, you just have to reach out and take it! but make no mistake it will be hard. very hard. its so worth it though. the feeling of euphoria when youre seen for who you really are. its so worth it!!
